Full course description

The course "Introduction to Human Rights” provides a short outline of the origins, principles, contents, and main monitoring mechanisms of international human rights law.

Learning about human rights can be a lifelong process, and it is clearly not possible to learn in a few hours all that you need to know in order to be an expert in human rights. However, once you know the foundations, it will be much easier for you to take next steps and to expand your knowledge and understanding further. You might want to complement this course with further studies on the core human rights instruments, or other issues that interest you and/or that relate to your own professional role and aspirations.

Upon successful completion of the course you should expect to:

  • Have  a  fair  understanding  of   the  background  and  history  of  the international human rights regime.
  • Be familiar with the international instruments which form the backbone of international human rights.
  • Know the main systems for monitoring the implementation of international instruments.
  • Be familiar with existing regional human rights systems, and their functions and differences.
